BIOPHYSICS AND COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY, ENGINEERING Correction for “Biomechanics of red blood cells in human spleen and consequences for physiology and disease,” by Igor V. Pivkin, Zhangli Peng, George E. Karniadakis, Pierre A. Buffet, Ming Dao, and Subra Suresh, which appeared in issue 28, July 12, 2016, of Proc Natl Acad Sci USA (113:7804–7809; first published June 27, 2016; 10.1073/pnas.1606751113). The authors note that on page 7806, the expression for red blood cell (RBC) volume (Eq. 3) appeared incorrectly. The correct exact expression for RBC volume, to be taken within Eq. 8 corresponding to the dotted line in Fig. 3, should be given as

Biomechanics of red blood cells in human spleen and consequences for physiology and disease.
Red blood cells (RBCs) can be cleared from circulation when alterations in their size, shape, and deformability are detected. This function is modulated by the spleen-specific structure of the interendothelial slit (IES). Here, we present a unique physiological framework for development of prognostic markers in RBC diseases by quantifying biophysical limits for RBCs to pass through the IES, usi...
متن کاملBone Marrow Transplantation in Thalassemia (Part 1)
During the last two decades conventional therapy has improved the prognosis of thalassemia. However, despite such improvement it still remains a progressive disease with treatment-related complications such as hepatitis, liver fibrosis, and cardiac disease. Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) can prevent or delay progression of the aforementioned complications. The importance of clinical research...

Background and Objective: Nowadays, although umbilical cord blood is a commonly used source of hematopoietic stem cell, its low frequency of these cells is the main factor limiting its clinical application. The transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells derived from placenta tissue along with umbilical cord blood cells of the same sample may be an appropriate approach to solve this problem. In...

Background and Objective: Pomalidomide - a combination of Lenalidomide and Thalidomide drugs- is one of the newest anticancer drugs. Pomalidomide induces apoptosis in cancer cells. Furthermore, few studies indicating its relatively low cytotoxic effects on normal peripheral blood cells have been carried out. However, there is yet no information about the effects of Pomalidomide on bone marrow c...

Background and Objective: Mobilization of Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) for transplantation and the importance of -adrenergic signals in induction of this process have been well investigated. However, little is known about the role of -adrenergic signals in mobilization of HSCs and factors influenced by these signals. The Chemokine Stromal Derived Factor -1 (SDF-1) which is expressed by hum...
